"Behind the Lens,
Wong Kar-wai"
"This exploration of Wong Kar-wai’s filmography is a reflection of how deeply his common themes resonate with my own experiences. I like to think this site can showcase the impact he has had on my own understanding of film as an art form."

Wong Kar-Wai’s style has had a profound influence on my artistic journey. I find that his masterful approach to blending visuals with the emotions of his narratives has developed my own understanding of cinema much further. I see it as more than entertainment now, and understand how powerful it can be as a form of expression. This website is a celebration of that fact.

His storytelling has taught me the power of fleeting moments, and subtle emotions. In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express demonstrate Wong’s understanding that every frame is a canvas, and also of the power of silence. The way that every element of his craft is controlled and thought about, from colour to soundtrack, serves to create an immersive world that viewers are pulled into. They can’t help but relate to the emotional state and intimate realities of his characters because of this.

Wong’s fluid use of time in his narratives was a big inspiration for me. I took this non-linear approach to storytelling and made it my own. I wanted this project to be a personal exploration of life’s moments, depicting them in an artistic manner as Wong might. I also wanted to capture some element of solitude, so commonly depicted in Wong’s work, and so I made the urban environment more than a backdrop, but rather, made it a character itself.

This site is not just a tribute to Wong’s artistic legacy, but a reflection on how his work has affected my creative understanding. I have been challenged to explore new possibilities in narrative through this, and I believe that I will be able to more meaningfully portray life’s moments because of this.
